Despite the fact that four GOP Senators (John Boozman of Arkansas, Mike Johanns of Nebraska, Richard Burr of North Carolina, and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania) helped to write the bill, 40 of the Senate Republicans voted against a jobs bill for veterans. It's like the GOP supports the troops but only when it is convenient for them. I have to confess that I did not read the bill yet but I find it reprehensible that no Republican voted to support our troops. I remember when the Support Our Troops signs were in all of their yards.
Looking at the article on MSNBC, this is a bill that would "would provide job training for military veterans" but due to a filibuster, it died in the Senate. It's intriguing as the GOP blasted the latest jobs report but the unemployment numbers for military veterans are at 11%.
Former Patrick Murphy, a former Democratic congressman from Pennsylvania—the first Iraq War vet to serve in Congress—called the Republicans' obstruction a "disgrace."Sorry but voting against cloture to prevent the bill from coming to the floor is the same as voting against the bill. There is no sugarcoating this fact.
"These men and women fight for us overseas," he said. "The last thing they need to do is come back home and fight to get jobs."
When contacted by MSNBC, several GOP staffers tried to squirm out on a technicality, arguing that their bosses hadn't voted against vets per se, but merely against a rule that would have needed to be waived for the Senate to vote on the entire bill.
Ridiculous, said Murphy.
"These guys are looking for excuse after excuse after excuse" to obstruct any progress "because there's an election six-and-a-half weeks away."
He continued: "It's blatant partisan politics. And this is why America hates the Senate and hates the Congress."
The Washington Post reported that they voted against it because it would add to the deficit. The same deficit that was caused by two wars and tax cuts for the wealthy. The same deficit that they helped to build but won't do anything to bring in new revenue because they are afraid of being voted out of office. To echo Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, this is a new low for the Republican Party.
“They’re going to kill it on a technicality,” Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), one of the bill’s co-sponsors, said on the floor before the vote. “That’s the bottom line here. That’s what’s going on here, and it’s sad.”It should be noted that there a few good Republicans out there: Scott Brown of Massachusetts, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Dean Heller of Nevada, and Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine.
Democrats charged that Republican opposition stemmed from a refusal to support an initiative that originated in the White House. The corps, loosely based on the Civilian Conservation Corps created during the Great Depression, would employ veterans in conservation, resource management and historic preservation projects on public lands. The legislation would also provide for hiring veterans as police officers and firefighters.
Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) said the measure would have “sailed” through the Senate in past years but had been derailed by partisanship. “Blocking a veterans’ jobs bill is a new low,” he said in a statement.
Voting against this bill caused the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America to release a statement. Both the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars are hoping for compromise. I doubt anything happens between the two parties but we can only hope.
The Republicans keep talking about not voting on anything that deals with raising the deficit. If they wanted to lower the deficit, they would step away from the pledge that they signed when they gave their soul to Grover Norquist and start acting like the fucking human beings that they are supposed to fucking be!
Start treating the troops with the fucking respect that they deserve. They fought in TWO WARS. One of which that they had no business fighting in. One that was really fought over oil. You and I both know it because there were no Weapons of Mass Destruction.

There are already six job training programs out there. This bill violated the budget control act. It would have never been heard in the House, where revenue bills are required to originate.
Democrats knew that it would not go anywhere, and are still using this as a weapon to try to make it look as though republicans voted against the military. And judging by your post, it is working. Don't fall for the hype and the tricks that your party loves to engage in.
