Never mind that the National's hat features a lone "W" above the bill, an uncomfortable reminder to some people in this overwhelmingly Democratic city of their Republican president. The "W" stands for Washington, not Walker. It is not a reminder to me about the President. It just happens to be a nickname, Dubya, to differentiate him from his father, George Herbert Walker Bush. So does that mean that Chicago and Cincinnati should remove the C from their baseball caps since it could stand for, I don't know, Castro.
It seems this writer for the NY Times is being an idiot.
In a related story, ESPN said that John F. Kennedy, Jr. through out the first pitch for the Washington Senators in 1961. Something just isn't right about that now, is it?
A couple of other stories in the sports world this week. Derek Lowe and Gary Sheffield.
As you know, Derek Lowe was on the championship team last season and he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League over the off-season. The media has been bombarding us saying that he shouldn't have done so. The Dodgers were behind him. Red Sox Nation was behind him. I'm in favor of him wearing the shirt as well. The shirt was made for the ring ceremony. Lowe had all rights to wear it after all.
Gary Sheffield was attacked by a Red Sox fan during last night's game. It was wrong of the fan to do what he did. It led off a domino effect with someone's beer spilling. As a Red Sox fan, I am embarrassed but Sheffield held his cool and I'm glad for that. Now, people are debating what to do with the wall over there. It was fan interference. Fans should not interfere with a ball in play. Dead balls, yes, balls in play, no way, Jose.
