I talked with Jack Conway for approximately 45 minutes on Thursday (October 20th) concerning his political future. Jack is getting intense pressure from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), Democrats in this area and friends to run for Congress. The DCCC considers him one of their primary recruits.I can't say this enough. We need a charismatic candidate running against Anne Northup. We need a strong candidate that can run a strong campaign and raise several funds. I know Jack Conway can do this. I believe in Jack Conway. I don't know if Jack is reading this but I hope he does. Does Jack know about the blog? If he gets the Bridge, than I assume he does know.
As you might expect, this is a very tough decision. Would you want to run for Congress against an incumbent with tremendous power and a $1million warchest currently? She will probably approach $4 million in her funds alone by the end of the cycle. So what is Jack going to do?
Jack will do the right thing for himself, the community and the Democratic Party. He will also be a political force in this community for many years to come.
He is going to Washington on October 25th to talk to the DCCC. He wants to make an announcement as soon as possible after this meeting, for a variety of reasons. If Jack runs, then he must start organizing his campaign team. If Jack doesn’t run, then he wants another candidate to have the time to mount a campaign.
I know that Northup will attempt to tie Jack Conway for his working with Gov. Paul Patton. However, we can turn this on her easily. She still supports Governor Fletcher and she has yet to return money from Tom Delay.
If you don't know a thing about Jack, this comes via his old campaign website, which, by the way, is still up and running.
Jack holds an undergraduate degree in public policy studies from Duke University. While in college, he studied abroad at Cambridge University in England. Jack then graduated with honors from the National Law Center at George Washington University. While in Washington, D.C., he worked in the U.S. Attorney’s office on criminal justice issues and for the House Banking Committee. He's been working hard for Kentuckians since. He served Gov. Patton as the Deputy Secretary of the Governor’s Executive Cabinet as well as Legal Counsel.
More importantly, it was Jack Conway who was one of the main people who drafted the nationally acclaimed Postsecondary Education Improvement Act of 1997 in Kentucky. This act helped put our universities on the rise.
One more thing:
During his time in Frankfort, Jack also played an important administrative role. He served as deputy chief operating officer for Kentucky State Government – a job in which he helped coordinate the activities of the 14 executive branch cabinets and provided policy direction to the state agencies that employ more than 33,000 people full time with a $12 billion budget.Jack Conway knows how to govern.
Jack Conway should be elected to Congress in 2006. We can defeat Anne Northup once and for all. I'm an optimist. I have faith in Jack Conway. I hope you do, too.
