First off, Governor Carroll is not a candidate for governor and he said so today at the CDKY State Convention: "It ain't me."
Back to the plan, it is called the Committee of 29. This committee will consist of party leadership, state house leadership, state senate leadership, all former governors, all statewide elected officials (I hope Ben Chandler's included), the heads of the Kentucky Young Democrats, College Dems of Kentucky, Democratic Women's Club. There may be one representative from each congressional district. Gov. Carroll has a few more meetings but it is looking like everyone will agree right now.
What the committee will do is endorse a single nominee in 2007. Now, this in hopes of having a non-devisive primary. Gov. Carroll is talking with prospective candidates that are considering running in 2007. He is trying to get pledges to see if the other candidates will not run if the committee endorses someone else.
Yes, former candidate Bruce Lunsford might be running. He has pledged not to run if the committee endorses someone else. Bruce Lunsford ran with $8 million in 2003, he'll have $15 million in 2007.
This plan will be best in order to spend more money in November 2007 than for a devisive primary. I hope the state party leadership considers this. I'll sign on if he needs bloggers...but I'm all for it.
Other people may include the heads of the KEA and AFL-CIO in Kentucky.
Unrelated to this, but he had some words to say about State Treasurer Jonathan Miller. Gov. Carroll has lots of confidence in Jonathan. He said that he's one of the hardest working office-holders that we have. When Governor Carroll was pushing the bill for the state teachers healthcare (or another one of those), Jonathan sent out 100,000 emails that day!
All in all, today was a great day.
