The Kentucky General Assembly will consider numerous bills dealing with military veterans.
Right now there are more than 30 proposals before the 2006 General Assembly related to veterans or current military members and their families. That's not counting resolutions to honor various Kentucky residents for their service, including those killed in Iraq. And more could be introduced.Former University of Kentucky Student Government President Alan Aja writes an editorial on UK and racism.
Rep. Mike Weaver, D-Elizabethtown, is co-sponsoring the veterans' mathematical preference plan. It would allow veterans the possibility of scoring above the otherwise high score of 100.
It would also require state job applications to highlight whether a candidate has military experience. State hiring officials would then be required to offer those candidates an interview.
"If they get the interview, I think they'll sell themselves because of what they bring with them," said Weaver, chairman of the House Seniors, Military Affairs and Public Safety Committee.
Another bill Weaver has offered would keep people from protesting at funerals or burial ceremonies inside 300 feet. Violators would be subject to a misdemeanor, Weaver said.

I'm not surprised but Delaware Senator Joe Biden has said that he is on track for a run for president in two years.
He also has developed what might well be his campaign theme: a "quintessential middle-class guy" standing up for the increasingly beleaguered American middle class. Why so late? That's what hurt former Florida Governor-turned-Senator Bob Graham.
But Biden also realizes that his biggest obstacle to getting the Democratic nomination, and the White House, might not be Hillary Clinton but his own loquaciousness.[...]
Biden told me last week that he achieved the 2005 objectives he set for himself to confirm he is doing the right thing in running, but he does not expect to make any formal announcements until late 2007 or even early 2008.

Shaul Mofaz has warned Iran.
Mofaz, who was born in Iran, said: "You, who are leading your country with an ideology of hatred, terror, and anti-Semitism, had better take a look at history and see what became of tyrants like you who tried to annihilate the Jewish people. They only brought disaster upon their own people." Though he stopped short of threatening military action, the defense minister said Israel "will not reconcile itself" to Iran getting the bomb.
