2008: U.S. Senate Races

Here is the makeup of the United States Senators up for re-election in November 2008. There are 12 Democrats and 21 Republicans up for re-election. Several of the GOP candidates are vulnerable.

Tom Harkin (D-IA)
Mary Landrieu (D-LA)
John Kerry (D-MA)
Carl Levin (D-MI)
Max Baucus (D-MT)
Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Jack Reed (D-RI)
Tim Johnson (D-SD)
Jay Rockefeller (D-WV)

Republicans:
Jeff Sessions (R-AL)
Ted Stevens (R-AK)
Saxby Chambliss (R-GA)
Pat Roberts (R-KS)*
Mitch McConnell (R-KY)*
Larry Craig (R-ID)
Susan Collins (R-ME) vs. Tom Allen (D-ME)
Norm Coleman (R-MN)*
Thad Cochran (R-MS)
Chuck Hagel (R-NE)
John Sununu (R-NH)*
Pete Domenici (R-NM)
Elizabeth Dole (R-NC)*
James Inhofe (R-OK)*
Gordon Smith (R-OR)*
Lindsey Graham (R-SC)
Lamar Alexander (R-TN)
John Coryn (R-TX)
John Warner (R-VA)
Mike Enzi (R-WY)*

Open Seats
Colorado: vs. Mark Udall (D-CO)

* denotes that they are vulnerable.

Lautenberg is up there in age and I believe that will be an open seat. Possible open seats include Massachusetts and Deleware, although Deleware has a late primary so Biden could still run if he loses the presidential primaries.

If Dole is as vulnerable as they say, I wonder if John Edwards makes another try at the Senate seat.

Maine Congressman Tom Allen is seriously considering the race against Sen. Collins. I will update this post as candidates express interest or announce their intentions.

Wayne Allard (R-CO) is stepping down.
