I’ve spent my first days in office concentrating on my priorities - establishing an Internet Crimes Unit, drafting cybersafety legislation and helping craft an identity theft bill. All of these initiatives protect Kentuckians from criminals who are using new technology to prey on our children and scam our seniors.
The cybersafety legislation that I co-wrote with Representative Johnny Bell of Glasgow brings Kentucky statutes up-to-date with changes in technology and truly has the potential to make a national impact. It will make Kentucky the first state to ban registered sex offenders from visiting social-networking sites that are frequented by children, like MySpace and Facebook. House Bill 367 passed the full House by a vote of 94 to 0 in late February.
We’ll be rolling out our Internet Crimes Unit this spring – committing a portion of our investigators to solely working on cases that are committed in cyberspace. The unit will conduct sexual-predator stings and work with local investigators.
In early February, I traveled to communities across the Commonwealth who were devastated by the winter tornadoes to share information with local leaders about protecting residents from fraudulent out-of-state contractors and how to report home-repair scams to authorities.
As you can see, we’ve been busy these first few weeks in office. I appreciate your support and I know that working together we can help keep Kentucky families safe.
