Governor Beshear issues statement on proposed budget
FRANKFORT, KY – The following statement was issued today by Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear in response to the House and Senate budget conferees reaching an apparent agreement on a new biennial budget.

“Like the rest of the state we are only slowly learning the details of the General Assembly’s proposed compromise budget. As the entire document becomes public, we will take time to analyze its various aspects and weigh them against the needs of the state.

“However, I can say I’m disappointed that the proposed budget does not include any plan for additional, recurring revenue so desperately needed by Kentucky.

“As you recall I proposed not one but two plans for recurring revenue -- namely expanded gaming and an increase in the state’s low cigarette tax -- in an effort to move the state forward in the areas of education, health care, public safety and economic development.

“The House of Representatives made its own proposal for additional revenue. However, the Senate majority has refused to consider any new revenue options.

“Without much needed recurring revenues, these and other vital services will not be adequately funded.”
