The latest press release from Fletcher's office and his reaction to the ruling by the Kentucky Court of Appeals:
The Governor achieved a significant win today toward placing lawful parameters on the unprecedented actions of Greg Stumbo. By finding that we have shown irreparable harm, the Court of Appeals recognized that the action of indicting persons who cannot be prosecuted to be at odds with Kentucky law. These indictments serve only to harm the reputations of innocent individuals. If they were innocent, why, Governor Fletcher, did you pardon them?
Attorney General Greg Stumbo has a more accurate response to the rulings. Unlike Governor Fletcher, his response actually makes sense.
"Today the Court of Appeals has protected the Special Grand Jury from attacks by the Governor’s lawyers. The Court held that it is inappropriate and unnecessary to prohibit the Grand Jury’s work, even temporarily. The Court firmly rejected the Governor’s attempt to prevent further indictments for criminal actions.Look at the AP article.
"This is an important victory for my Office, the Special Grand Jury, and, most importantly, the people of Kentucky. I will continue to protect the public’s right to know about government abuse and corruption."
Jim Newberry, a Democrat for Fletcher in 2003, is running for Mayor in Lexington.
Newberry faces Isaac in next May's primary. Also running are Urban County Councilman Bill Farmer and store owner Charles Martin. The two finalists proceed to the November election.I'm making no endorsement in this race. At least, not at this moment.
Newberry, a partner at Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs, one of Kentucky's dominant law firms, hopes to draw support from Democrats and Republicans in the non-partisan race. He is a Democrat, and he served former Democratic Gov. Brereton Jones in a variety of jobs. But he's also a friend and supporter of Republican Gov. Ernie Fletcher.
Last night's introductory speech did not offer specifics on his campaign platform, which he said will be rolled out in coming months.
Junior Bridgeman's name has been suggested as a potential candidate against Anne Northup.
