The pair had become good friends and jogging buddies after being elected to the Senate in 1998.As we all know, the final three names were Lieberman, Kerry, and Edwards.
In the spring of 2000, both survived an initial vetting process, and Bayh's one-on-one interview with Gore was scheduled before Edwards'. During one of their regular runs, Bayh told Edwards what to expect.
"Evan, who could have resisted giving John any advantage and so could have stayed quiet, instead told him about his interview as they ran," Elizabeth Edwards wrote in the just-published "Saving Graces."
Bayh told Edwards that Gore hadn't asked him anything hard, and their discussion had been low-key and friendly.
Edwards, however, got a grilling from Gore the next day.
During their run that afternoon, Edwards confided to Bayh that the interview had been tough. Edwards had been unsure what that meant, but Bayh knew.
"That's bad news for me," he told Edwards, according to the book. "He's serious about you, and he wasn't serious about me."
