(This email just showed up in my inbox.)
Q. Can you be a Christian and a Democrat?
A. Of course. People of sincere faith can belong to any political party, or to none at all.
This would seem an obvious answer, particularly given the value Americans have always placed in the freedoms of religion and association.
But in recent years, all over Kentucky, honest people of faith have been manipulated by high-pressure, partisan tactics in which their core religious values have been questioned and sometimes attacked because of their political affiliations and the candidates they support.
With another election just a few weeks away, it is time to fight back.
This is one reason that I wrote THE COMPASSIONATE COMMUNITY: TEN VALUES TO UNITE AMERICA. In it, I argue that God is not the province of one political party. More importantly, I suggest that all Americans, regardless of faith or political affiliation, should join in efforts to develop policies that reflect the all-encompassing value "to love your neighbor as yourself."
THE COMPASSIONATE COMMUNITY won't tell you how or what to think. Instead, it might provide you with some ammunition (from the Bible and other religious sources) the next time someone tells you how to think or vote. It might also provide you with some inspiration on how to help make your community, our Commonwealth, and this country even greater.
