Dennis Hastert PM Press Conference

While taking notes for my interviewing class, I've been flipping between the MSNBC coverage of Foleygate and the Tigers game on ESPN.

Mike Viqueira is reporting that Hastert wanted former FBI Director Louis Freeh to probe an investigation but Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi refused that possible scenario.

According to MSNBC:
WASHINGTON - House Speaker Dennis Hastert will take responsibility for the unfolding page sex scandal but insist he will stay on as leader of House Republicans, a House GOP official said Thursday.

Press conference:
Hastert is walking up to the stage and thanks everyone for showing up.

He is deeply sorry that it happened and that they are taking responsibility and ultimately, the buck stops there.

They are trying to correct the problem and are asking for criminal investigations and are investigating in Congress. They are setting up a tip number for the investigations.

He's fielding questions.

Hastert learned that there was more than a minor problem on this past Friday before the campaign recess. I think he's lying there...Forham told Hastert's staff three years ago. Why is he saying he doesn't know when his own staffers knew?!?

"If somebody didn't let us know, then there's a problem."

Hastert expects that he'll be speaker again when the session starts up in January 2007.

He walks away to jeers and limited applause.

The tip number is 1-866-348-0481.

In some other news dealing with the scandals, this via the FNC.
"The data suggests Americans have bailed on the speaker," the source told FOX News. "And the difference could be between a 20-seat loss and 50-seat loss."
Just as a heads up, Navy veteran John Laesch is the Democrat running against Hastert in IL-14.

Here is the link to the complete transcript of the press conference.
