More sad news out there

Just two days after Peter Jennings died, it was announced that Dana Reeve has lung cancer.

It's a little known fact that three Deans were hired by the St. Louis Cardinals back in the day. In addition to pitchers Dizzy and Daffy Dean, there was a vendor named Elmer Dean, the oldest of the brothers, who was signed on August 8, 1934.
Elmer's "promotion" to the big leagues came when business-minded Dizzy saw an opportunity for Elmer and wheeled a deal for him to come to St. Louis to work for the Cardinals in '34. Elmer's major league vending career was short-lived. He worked just briefly at Sportsman's Park before leaving the team, some say because his brothers were embarrassed by the stunt, and others claim Elmer simply didn't like the gig.

It wasn't the end of Elmer's baseball career, however. For a few summers he and his father did promotional work for the House of David while Dizzy and Paul barnstormed for the team.
JUlian Taverez had his 25th hold to tie Todd Worrell for the most single-season holds for the Cardinals. Anthony Reyes, who was optioned after the game to Memphis in order for outfielder Skip Schumaker to be recalled, was the first Cardinal to win his debut since Jason Simontacchi in 2002.

As of today, 44 players played for the Red Sox this season. Twelve of the starters on opening day are still on the 25 man roster.

Happy Birthday to Louisville Bats play by play announcer Jim Kelch.
