From Senator Chuck Schumer:

Tonight, we will all listen to President Bush's State of the Union address. What's more important than what we hear tonight is what we will NOT hear.

We will not hear how President Bush's short-sighted policies have failed to adequately protect America from those who wish us harm. We will not hear how his go-it-alone attitude in Iraq means that America alone must bear the price of war. We will not hear how his flawed attempt to privatize Social Security will abandon our responsibility to provide seniors what they have worked a lifetime to earn. We will not hear how his gutting of overtime pay regulations and refusal to aggressively pursue an increase to the minimum wage make it harder for many Americans to support their families.

But I'm going to fight to make sure the American people know the facts about the President's policies.

Senator Harry Reid, my fellow Democratic Senators and I have a plan to roll back these short-sighted policies. We call it The American Promise. It's a forward-thinking agenda to make America stronger both at home and abroad. It's a promise to you to enact an agenda that expands opportunities for Americans by creating new jobs, enacting middle class tax relief, expanding access to affordable healthcare, protecting our environment, and rewarding companies that create jobs at home. Yet while the concepts are simple and sound, getting a fair hearing for our ideas, however, will be a difficult and uphill fight without a Democratic majority in the Senate.

That's why we need your help. Your financial support now will help us take back the Senate in 2006 and realize The American Promise.

With just a few more votes, Democrats can control the Senate again, and begin the hard work necessary to fulfill The American Promise: we are committed to standing with our men and women in uniform to ensure they have the resources they need to keep America safe. We know that we have an obligation to provide the opportunities necessary for all Americans to follow their dreams. And we are ready to meet our responsibility to protect both the oldest and the youngest Americans. That is our Promise, and your contribution can make it a reality.

With your help, we can fulfill our Promise, and show the American people what the state of our union truly can be.

Yours sincerely,
Senator Charles E. Schumer
