Ward, now a consultant on land-use issues, said that with Fletcher's incumbency and Harper's wealth, Northup will find herself as much a target as she was an aggressor in past campaigns.
"We're going to see as much negative campaigning on TV against Anne as she put out against her opponents over all these years," Ward said. "I wonder if she'll be able to take it as good as she dished it out."
Jack Conway, a Democrat who barely lost to Northup in a hard-fought 2002 congressional campaign, said he likes Northup personally, but said her competitiveness comes with "a bit of an edge." He said she tends to "see the world in black and white. You're either with her or against her."
